Seen: Orchard Road turns into our second river

Close to 100mm of rain fell upon us this morning in a short span of 2 hours between 9am to 11am, causing a massive flood downtown. The amount of rain was approximately 60 per cent more than the average monthly rainfall in June. In less than 2 hours Scotts Road was transformed into Scotts River. Traffic also came to a standstill at some parts of Tanglin Road, Stevens Road and Evans Road as floodwaters went as high as half a metre, a Straits Times report said. It also mentioned that shopfronts at Serene Centre, Bukit Timah, were affected.

In January 1999, a certain Singapore newspaper article reported on why the famous shopping strip will never be hit by a flood.

For a flood to hit anywhere in Singapore, it takes a combination of high tides and about 100mm of rainfall within an hour.

And so it did. Guess they did not take global warming into consideration then.
